MOVIE REVIEW: ABEJOYE, WHEN YOU GIVE CHRIST THE WHEEL

“Jeeeeeesu Olayiotan Abejoye, sanu fun mi.” These were the words muttered by Oloye Oluoje after his evil attack on Abejoye, a one-time evil genius who had encountered Christ and given his all to Him backfired.

You might be wondering what this is all about. It is not a real-life story, but it is an enactment of the life of an occultic War Lord who found Christ in an unusual manner during a visit to his children in America.

The movie, Abejoye comes from the staple of Mount Zion Films, a leader in Christian movies in Africa and a pioneer of the Christian Movie Ministry in Nigeria.

The movie Abejoye, is named after the main character, Olayiotan Abejoye, played by the Founder of Mount Zion FIlms and the Director Evangelist Mike Bamiloye, is a movie-series, the likes of Police Story, (which was released in the 80s) but this is more purposeful, I dear say.

If you belong to a family, you have a responsibility to support every good project that comes out of that family. Now, if you are a Christian and you are yet to see Abejoye, probably because you haven’t heard of it (which will be the shocker of the century), then you need to. But if you have and you are yet to watch it because it is predominantly in Yoruba (which by the way means it qualifies for an Oscar), my question to you will be, did you watch Passion of the Christ? It is subtitled and the spoken words and translation align. Just saying!

When a man who is an occultic leader in his village decides to visit his son, Bamidele in America, his daughter in-law, Laide is uncomfortable because as a Christian family, darkness and light do not mix. The father’s intention to visit America and strange dreams, which consistently trouble Laide and her son cause an unrest in his son’s home because the wife was adamant and unwelcoming when the father finally arrived.

Being a Warlord, he suffers many attacks from home while in his son’s house and was heard chanting in the occultic on several occasions until the wife couldn’t bear it any longer and demanded his repatriation to Nigeria, which would lead to an encounter with a Pastor and the beginning of a new life in Christ. The movie begins with the usual conflict between darkness and light until Abejoye encounters Christ in quite an unusual manner and begins to wage spiritual warfare for his son’s family. He assumes the role of the spiritual head of a staunch (or so they thought) Christian family.

The movie unlike others focuses on the power, presence and role of God in Christianity. It reminds every Christian that we are but humans or as Wale Adenuga would say, “we are but pencil in the hand of the Maker” and He has a responsibility to lead us.

It reveals how easy it is to live as a Christian if only we believe and walk with Christ relying less on our own understanding. It identifies the role and Character of a spiritual head or “Daddy” as we say in Christendom, which is to offer guidance and leadership. To give a listening ear and be less judgmental.

It reminds Christians that we have a responsibility to win souls unto God and not cast them away. It brings to bare the fact that nobody is too far gone in the occultic to give his/her to Christ and that nobody is “too Christian” to fall into temptation.

Abejoye is a complete Christian movie that details the walk of a Christian from conversion to leadership. And most importantly, it reminds us that every Christian has a responsibility beyond funding kingdom work and attending church service, i.e. to win souls for Christ. After all He says, go into the world and preach the gospel…Mark 16 vs 15.

Abejoye is a real-life experience that teaches Christians that the walk in Christ is not a competition and being born again before your neighbour does not mean you will be more spiritually fortified than him/her.

Christianity is a personal walk with Christ that should resonate publicly.

I came across Abejoye sometime in March last year, just before the lockdown and I watched all three Seasons at that time. The movie series started 3 years ago.

Season four started in December 2020 and on Sunday, Episode 3 of Season four was released. But before you watch the latest episode, go back to Season one and watch every season in each Chapter. These nine episodes will last approximately 11 hours. Binge on it. It is more interesting than any telenovela. As a young Christian or new convert, it will give you direction and as an established Christian, it will right your wrong.

Evangelist Bamiloye, a Christian of over 30 years practiced the teachings of Proverbs 22, which says, “bring up your child in the way they should go.” His children, Joshua Mike-Bamiloye Sound and Effects and Damilola Mike-Bamiloye, Director of Photography are not just brought up in a Christian home, they have been brought up to take after their father. Their 21st century approach to movie making and knowledge of new technology, separates Abejoye from previous Mount Zion productions and every episode, (or as it is called, season) is better than the previous.

With characters like Afopina, Kinkin Yinu, Pastor, Iya Akesan and Oloye Oluoje the movie will get you glued to your video device for as long as it plays.

If you have watched Season 4 Episode 2, since Kinki Yinu is now born again and the African Traditional Chiefs in USA are falling to death, what do we expect in Episode 3, which was released on Sunday??

The movie is shot on location in USA and Nigeria.
